What Is GRE?

What Is GRE

The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardized test that is essential in the admission requirements for many graduate universities in the United States of America and Canada.

It is one of the few standardized tests that the Educational Testing Service administers.

GRE is an examination that is designed to measure candidates’ abilities in exercises of general academic nature – regardless of their area of specialization.

GRE stands out from the rest because it is the most demanded test business schools request from their future Master of Business Administration (MBA) students.

Established in 1936, GRE has over 584,677 examination takers annually. GRE is designed to measure the extent to which undergraduate education has developed candidates’ Verbal Skills, Quantitative Skills, and Abstract Thinking.

Types of GRE Examination

There are two types of GRE; GRE General Test and GRE Subject Test.

The GRE General Exam is in two formats: computer-based and paper-based examinations. You should know that the paper-delivered test is not available to everyone. It is only offered in places where the computer-delivered GRE examination is unavailable.

The GRE subject test is a paper-based test format only. The GRE subject tests six disciplines; Biology, Chemistry, Literature in English, Mathematics, Psychology, and Physics.

GRE Examination Pattern

The GRE examination pattern is in 5 sections. The sections are;

1) Verbal Reasoning: this section spans 30 minutes. This is where candidates are given incomplete data and they are to come up with conclusions. This section is to check the level of reasoning skills of candidates.

2) Quantitative Reasoning: this spans 35 minutes. This section tests the mathematical skill of candidates.

3) Analytical writing: this spans 60 minutes. This section tests how well candidates defend their ideas, how well candidates make sound arguments, and so on.

The fourth and fifth sections are Research and Unscored sections, the time for these 2 sections varies.

How Long Is GRE Examination

The duration for the GRE computer-based examination is 3 hours and 45 minutes (break inclusive), while the duration for the paper-based examination is 3 hours and 30 minutes (break inclusive).

GRE Examination Methods

The examination methods for GRE are computer-based and paper-based examination, paper-based is only offered where computer-based is unavailable.

The Computer-based tests are offered throughout the year and can be retaken any time after 21 days, up to 5 times every 12 months, while the paper-based test is offered up to three times per year in October, November, and February.

Validity of GRE Score

The result after taking the GRE examination is valid only for 5 years.

So ensure you use that GRE result before it becomes invalid.

Who Needs To Take The GRE

Prospective graduate and business school applicants that are interested in Masters’s program, Specialized Masters’s in Business, MBA, or a Doctoral degree should sit for GRE.

How Long Will It Take To Get My GRE Score

Every candidate gets an unofficial score immediately after they finish with the GRE computer-based examination. The wait for the result of the paper-based examination is a bit longer, candidates will have to wait for about six weeks.
